5 Things That Child-Based Nonprofits Can Give To Kids

Kids need love, understanding, and protection. They need trusted adults to provide and advocate for them. Child-based nonprofits strive to help kids obtain everything they need in order to thrive. Here are five things that child based nonprofits can give to kids.

1. Nutritious Meals

Children grow rapidly. Their bodies and brains develop quickly throughout their childhoods, especially once puberty strikes. Kids' bodies need healthy meals in order to fuel their growth. Unfortunately, some kids struggle with poverty. Insufficient nutrition can stunt kids' growth and cause them to do poorly in school. Some child-based nonprofits work to provide meals for kids and to help their families access fresh, healthy groceries.

2. Shelter

Children are physically weaker than adults and, as such, may be more at risk for assault. Kids need somewhere warm, dry, and safe to sleep. Homelessness is a problem that affects children as well as adults. Some child-based nonprofits strive to help homeless children get off the streets. By connecting kids and their families to housing resources, these charities can ensure that kids have a safe place to live.

3. Security

Staying warm and dry is only one aspect of kids' physical need for safety. Children also deserve to be free from physical and emotional violence. Unfortunately, some kids experience abuse from family members or other adults. Peers can also cause kids to become unsafe through bullying. Luckily, some child-based charities focus on raising awareness of child abuse. These nonprofits provide resources that can help children get away from their abusers.

4. Medical Care

Medical care is another basic need. Regular check-ups can ensure that kids meet growth and development milestones appropriate for their age. Immunization can protect kids from deadly diseases and enable them to participate in school. Medical nonprofits can provide assistance for families who cannot afford basic medical care. Free check-ups, immunization, and emergency care can allow children to stay safe and healthy throughout their childhoods.

5. Education

Last but not least, some child-based nonprofits can provide educational support for children in need. School supply donations can help children get the equipment they need to succeed in school, even when their families can't afford it. Tutoring programs can help kids who are at risk of falling behind in their classes. A good education can help kids break the cycle of poverty and keep them out of trouble. In addition to direct educational support, there are also after-school programs designed to help kids stay busy and productive ways.

About Me

Doing Your Part

When I started thinking more seriously about volunteering at an orphanage for the year, I knew that I would be giving up a lot to go. In addition to not being around my friends and missing out on family festivities, I knew that I might also struggle to enjoy what I would be doing--especially since it was so foreign to me. However, I decided to keep working hard and doing what I knew I should do, and I knew I had to go. When I went, I could tell that my actions were making a difference. The kids really loved us, and we quickly made things better at the orphanage. Check out this blog to learn more about doing your part.
